About Us

Leaders in prosthetic and orthotic mobility

Chin and Partners has been caring for patients in an effective and efficient way to enhance prosthetic and orthotic mobility and comfort for over 20 years.

We have 4 conveniently located practices:

From Humble Beginnings

While still a student in the early 90’s, Jayson Chin, founder and director of Chin and Partners Inc, had a vision to establish a practise that was different to the “one man, do it all” practises commonly found in South Africa. The vision was to build a team of professionals to provide the highest level of care, where practitioners have time to focus on their individual areas of interest, developing their knowledge and enhancing their skills to create a patient centric practise, offering  professional care in a multidisciplinary environment. A practise that provided advice and exposure to the wide range of products and services offered in this industry. To realise this multifaceted vision has taken Jayson and his team on an exciting, sometimes challenging, mostly successful and very fulfilling journey……that is far from over!

Jayson established his private practise in 1999,  in Sea Point, Cape Town and within 2 years he had expanded the team to 3 qualified Orthotist Prosthetists. In 2001 Jayson established a 2nd practise in the rehabilitation gym at Vincent Pallotti Hospital, working closely with the highly successful team of orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists and biokineticists. This team is still providing quality care today.

In 2005, Jayson with his then partner, Clive McCrae, and orthopaedic surgeon Dr C Maraspini, established The Cape Amputee Clinic. The clinic team, which offers the services of a psychologist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, prosthetist and rehabilitation doctor, still meet every 2nd week at Vincent Pallotti Hospital. These clinic meetings are free, offering amputees and their families the opportunity to ask questions and gain information on all aspects of amputation, rehabilitation etc. from an experienced interdisciplinary team.

Leading Edge Care

In 2007, Jayson wanted to expose the developing market of ‘lifestyle bracing” to the public. These braces and orthotic products straddled the space between medical and retail and so Medsport was born; a walk, in-high end, retail type store that provided information, products and care from its Bree Street store until it closed in 2017. Chin and Partners has continued to include interactive display and product exposure at all our practices.

In 2009 we opened our 3rd practise in the Life Health Orthopaedic Unit of Excellence and together with the team of ‘super specialist’ orthopaedic surgeons, we provide in-hospital services and care.

In 2014 we relocated our custom manufacturing facility to Pinelands Business Park and upgraded it to allow our team of professionals and technicians to custom design and manufacture all types of prosthetics and orthotics in a world class facility. In 2017 we extended this space to include a clinical practise with consultation rooms and a gait training room. We have plans to develop this comprehensive prosthetic facility further in 2020.

Our latest development was in 2019  when we established a practise at Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital and we look forward to working with the dynamic team of medical professionals at this world class hospital to provide patients with efficient and effective prosthetic and orthotic care.

Meet The Team

Jayson Chin
Orthotist/Prosthetist
I am proud to be the founding member of our diverse team that is Chin and Partners and I am very fortunate to have a diverse roll within the practice. As the leader of this amazing team I ensure that we are growing as a practice while staying true to our mission of providing the highest level of care to all our orthotic and prosthetic patients. As a clinician I have many years of experience and I provide support to the other clinicians of our team as well as being a well-qualified sounding board.
My special interest lies in amputee rehabilitation and prosthetic care. I chair the Cape Amputee Clinic which is a non-profit multi-disciplinary team that ensures that the process of amputee rehabilitation is addressed from all the various perspectives; doctor, physiotherapist, Occupational therapist, psychologist, prosthetist. We all give up 2 hours of our time every second week to meet with patients that are either thinking about amputation or have had an amputation. We are then able help guide them and offer support in whatever decision they choose to follow. As an orthotist I have an interest in how we, as humans move during gait, both running and walking, and I am well known for my skill at consulting and providing foot orthotics and other devices. I qualified in 1995 from Pretoria Tech but only established my private practise in 1999 after returning from international travel where I spent time experiencing life and the amazing experiences that were on offer for an adventurous young man in places like the middle east, Europe and India. During this time, I also worked in the UK in the Orthotics and Prosthetics industry. My roots are in the Free State where I was born and grew up in the town of Kroonstad. I have a beautiful family; a supportive wife, 2 boys and 2 dogs. I enjoy cycling, hiking, spending time at the beach, reading and being with friends and family.

Prosthetist
I am a partner at Chin and Partners and Orthotist Prosthetist. I practice out of the Pinelands Business Park Clinic where our main manufacturing workshop is located. I am extremely passionate and empathetic in my role as a prosthetist. I love to help and solve prosthetic problems for amputees, and I thrive on seeing prosthetic users achieving all they can especially with clients who are keen to return to sporting activities.
I completed my studies at Tshwane University of Technology, cum laude, in 2003 and my Internship at Western Cape Orthotic and Prosthetic Centre in 2004. I left for England in 2005 to increase my experience within the Orthotic and Prosthetic field as well as a little travelling on the side. There I worked in the National Health System (NHS) for numerous private companies. I also worked for Ossur’s private practice in Wimbledon, London. After 7 fun and exciting years in the UK I decided to return to South Africa to start a family and joined Chin and Partners in January 2013. In my spare time I try and keep active and enjoy the outdoors, I enjoy mountain biking, road cycling and running. I have a wife, a son and a crazy Boston Terrier, Frank.

Orthotist
I am a qualified practitioner that joined the Chin and Partners family in 2019 where I started working in the Vincent Pallotti Hospital branch, but I have since been dividing my time equally with our new Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital branch.
I graduated from TUT in 2017 after completing my internship at Barkley & Oates Inc, where I was exposed to many different specialized courses that were hosted by local and international companies. After my internship in 2018, I started my new career working for a practice in the Eastern Cape where I managed a sister practice in a small town which helped develop business and people skills. In 2019 I completed my B-tech degree in Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics at TUT which gave me a much broader insight to our profession. My goal and passion in life is to utilize the knowledge gained over the years to provide the best possible care and education for my patients that will increase their quality of life. In my spare time I enjoy spending quality time with close friends and my family, be that at the home or somewhere out and about. I also enjoy spending time at the local game store for some table-top gaming, where new friendships are made almost on a weekly basis. I am a massive music fan and believe that music has the power to change your emotions in any way, which is why I enjoy playing my guitar when I feel stressed or down to lift my spirits.

Orthotist
I was born and brought up in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal. I attended Durban University of Technology, where I qualified with a bachelor’s degree in Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics in 2017.
I worked as an orthotist in my own capacity in 2018 in Durban, before moving to Cape Town to join the Chin and Partners Team in 2019. My interests are on all aspects of the orthotics and prosthetics field, but I have a special interest in orthotics; custom made and off the shelf and quite recently paediatric care of cranial remoulding therapy. I love being able to help people using non-surgical methods to assist in the rehabilitation of patients. From a young age, I have always been passionate about helping people and looking for opportunities in which I can make a difference to those around me. I am very family orientated and am enthusiastic about socialising, although when you can’t find me enjoying the outdoors with friends, I’m usually cooped up at home with a good book. I love to cook and take an interest in creative arts. Some of my other hobbies are dancing, binging series, and DIY projects.

I joined Chin and Partners in February 2020, after spending over 10 years in the hospitality industry. In 2010 I was blessed to have the opportunity to go work in Dubai and spent 5 amazing years gaining new experience.
I’ve always loved working with people from all walks of life. Gravitating to the medical field was such a huge scary step, but yet absolutely fulfilling in so many ways. When I’m not spending time with close friends and family, I love listening to music as it has the ability to change your mood instantly. As one of my favourite artist Bob Marley once said: “ Love the life you live, Live the life you love”

What some of our patients have to say

Dawood Cader

My name is Dawood Cader. I am 24 years old and I was 19 years old at the time of my amputation.

I am a right leg below-the-knee amputee. I lost my leg due to several severe damages to my foot and lower portion of my right shin due to a motorbike accident. The damages were really severe and the doctors recommended it be amputated. The reason they recommended it be amputated is firstly that I would have experienced a lot of unnecessary pain. Secondly, I would have to come in for several unnecessary operations which would have cost us time and money.

Shortly after the swelling stages of the amputation ended, Chin & Partners begab setting me up with a prosthetic leg. This process initially was painful but necessary. I experienced pain in my stump when we were in the process trying to find the correct fit for my specifically shaped stump in 2014. Every fitting after this was a painless experience.

Although we can rigorously depend on the staff of Chin and Partners, physically and emotionally, it is not necessary. They have assisted me in walking and living comfortably. Many people who I interact with are surprised to see that I am an amputee as my walking ability is so natural. The staff has assisted me in a way that I hardly require continuous checkups and I am free to live and thrive.

A lot of appreciation to them.

Philip Gray

In 2016, I caught Necrotizing Fasciitis which resulted in my having to undergo an emergency transfemoral amputation of my right leg. I was overseas at the time and once I was stable, I was medically repatriated to Cape Town, where I was admitted to the Vincent Pallotti hospital.

I first met Jayson Chin during the second week of my stay at the hospital, once my physical condition had improved and I was ready to start my rehabilitation. From the outset of my relationship with Chin and Partners, I have had a very good experience with the services and treatment they offer.

Jason himself is a consummate professional with huge empathy for his clients and unique handling skills. He has the ability to relate to clients and is able to translate complex walking algorhythms into simple English. Jason has built a practice which is staffed with highly-competent and compassionate experts in their field, who work closely together to ensure clients are provided with the highest levels of support and service to ensure that they are able to enjoy good quality of life.

Vernon Saayman

I had a blood clot behind my right knee. (Vascular). My right leg was amputated above the knee on Friday 13 June 2014. I was instructed to go for consultation with late Dave Herman at Vincent Palotti hospital.

My life changed. Since going to Vincent Palotti I met Dave, Jason, Janice, Theo and Jason. And the rest of the staff there. I felt welcomed and got to know the staff very well. They were always helpful, and comforting.

When ever I phoned I was helped professionally by Janice and all the staff, they would go the extra mile for me and my needs. When receiving my prosthesis,  I was overwhelmed by the assistance I got from the staff and positive drive to excel. Any one of the staff I could approach for help or guidance.

Not too sure of the exact name of my prosthesis and the make, but was advised by them what was the best one that suited my needs and abilities. I still ride my motorbikes from Harley Davidson to superbikes.

It is advisable to attend the amputee clinics, you learn a fair amount about your disability and meet other amputees from all races and make good friends.

I have had only good experiences and still do from Jason Chin, Vincent Palotti hospital. Thanks for your support.

Jean Jones

I am a social runner who has been plagued by pain in the lower back, hips and feet. Utilising custom-made orthotics in my running shoes have significantly reduced these niggles.

Many thanks to the team at Chin and Partners for excellent service when providing me with my latest pair of orthotics:

-The receptionist and accounts department have facilitated the claiming process with my medical aid; organising motivation letter, quotes and codes required for pre-authorisation

-The orthotist evaluated my running style, took scans and moulds of my feet and crafted a unique orthotic for each foot which I slipped into my running shoes and headed back to the road. They have been super comfortable and I have had a significant reduction in painful niggles in the hip and lower back after longer runs.

-I was also offered advice on exercises to add to my running program to strengthen weak muscle groups and improve flexibility.

Kevin Ellis

I am 41 years old and in 2014 I lost my lower left leg to a tiger shark in Somalia. I was transferred to the Vincent Palotti Hospital where the final surgery left me with a through knee amputation.

During my recovery period in hospital, I was introduced to Chin and partners. It was extremely comforting to be surrounded by this team of professionals. During these early days in hospital I found their amputee clinic to be very informative and helpful.

I decided fairly quickly that I would be happy to have Chin and partners as my prosthetic specialist. Its 5 years later and I can honestly say that I have not regretted the decision for one moment.

I received excellent guidance through the early stages of the prosthetic fitment, which I believe was the foundation for greater confidence in my new prosthetic. This newly found confidence aided in my ability and determination to start walking on the prothesis only two months after the shark attack. As a matter of fact, my new found independence and trust in the team and my entire prosthesis setup was so great, that I was willing to relocate to another country (where there was no support for the prosthesis) only 4 months after the attack.

Very soon after my arrival at Vincent Palotti I decided that the Ottobock Genium X3 is the only knee that would sustain my lifestyle. Over the past 5 years the customary adjustments and adaptations have all been very professionally handled by my Chin and Partners team. I have two other prosthetics, one designed purely for trail riding on my MTB, and a specifically designed prosthesis socket and foot for freediving or spearfishing.

The support I received from my Chin and Partner team is priceless. I recall instances where I was assisted by my prosthetist (either for fine tuning of the knee or urgent repairs) after hours or even over the Christmas holiday break when other service providers were closed. Due to the nature of my work I often need assistance on short notice or with short lead times and they always make a plan. They truly are a team you can depend on.

Chin and Partners are true professionals and they are invested in you as an individual. They are always willing to try new ideas, but their ability to really listen to you no matter how big or small the request is what makes interaction with them so special.

I am truly grateful to have met the Chin and Partners team as they have been a major part in my positive experience after becoming an amputee 5 years ago.
