Types of amputations include:

  • partial foot amputation – amputation of the lower limb below the ankle joint
  • ankle disarticulation – amputation of the lower limb at the ankle joint
  • transtibial amputation (also known as below knee amputation) – amputation of the lower limb between the knee joint and the ankle joint
  • knee disarticulation – amputation of the lower limb at the knee joint.
  • trans-femoral amputation (also known as above knee amputation)– amputation of the lower limb between the hip joint and the knee joint,
  • hip disarticulation – amputation of the lower limb at the hip joint.
  • trans-pelvic disarticulation – amputation of the whole lower limb together with all or part of the pelvis. This is also known as a hemipelvectomy or hindquarter amputation.

The Socket

The fit of the socket, the interface between the residual limb and the prosthesis, is the key to successful use of a prosthetic limb or prosthetics in general. Therefore, sockets are custom-made to fit the skeletal and musculature of the person’s residual limb, to provide more control and comfort ensuring an active lifestyle.

New materials like urethanes, mineral based liners and improved silicone, are much more flexible than the previously used hard plastics, allowing people of all ages to wear a comfortable, flexible and lightweight prosthesis.

Lower Limb Amputation Levels

Lower limb amputations can be divided into two broad categories – minor amputations and major amputations, Minor amputations generally refers to the amputation of digits eg toes. Major amputations are commonly referred to as below-knee amputation, above-knee amputation, through knee etc.
