Orthotic Braces – Lower Extremities

Knee

Knee pain is a common condition in all ages, both young and elderly patients, ranging from strains, “growing pains”, traumatic events to chronic conditions. The knee joint is one of the largest, most complex joints in our bodies and it carries a considerable amount of load/weight  through its weight bearing surfaces during daily activities. It is also located in the middle of a very long anatomical lever which further increases its risk of injury.  Orthotic Braces can help to alleviate pain and strain.

The knee joint glides and slides as it hinges and to do this it consists of the following anatomical features, amongst others:

  • 4 bones – the Femur (thigh bone), the Tibia (shine bone), the Fibula and the Patella (kneecap).
  • 4 ligaments – Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL), Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) and Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL).

Hinged Knee Bracing

A hinged knee brace provides excellent stability, compression and protection to relieve symptoms or to prevent further injury during recovery. Most hinged knee braces are made from a strong, breathable material that offers the user comfort and support while still being durable. The rigid hinge joint provides structure and strength to the brace while allowing it to maintain an intimate fit. These braces comes in both wrap around and pull on sleeve options.

The Hinged Knee brace is ideal for:

  • Mild sprains or strains of the knee.
  • Mild ligament tears such as the ACL, PCL, LCL and MCL.
  • Mild Osteoarthritis.
  • Post Arthroscopy Meniscectomy (a surgical procedure used to visualize, diagnose and treat problems inside the knee joint using the keyhole technique).
  • Mild general instability.

Product highlights:

  • Durable and lightweight
  • Breathable material
  • Easy to pull on or wrap around
  • Removable polycentric aluminum uprights that are malleable

Indications:

  •         ACL, MCL, LCL, PCL, rotary and combined instabilities

Osteoarthritis Knee Bracing

Osteoarthritis is a wear and tear type of arthritis that in most cases affects those that have had previous injury to the knee resulting in instability or it affects elderly patients. Osteoarthritis of the knee is the result of the articular cartilage in the knee joint that has gradually worn away. As the cartilage wears, it becomes frayed and rough, and the protective “joint space” between the bones decreases. This can result in bone rubbing  on bone. The joint space is the space between the thigh bone (Femur) and shin bone (Tibia). In the joint space there are 2 wedged shaped structures called the Meniscus that acts as a “shock absorber” when walking and they aid in keeping the knee joint stable.

OA (osteoarthritis) and affect all the compartments but it frequently affects one compartment more than  the other and it is this uneven damage that causes the malalignment of the knee joint that can make the leg look knocked-knee or bow-legged. As the damage to the knee increases, this malalignment progresses causing even more pain on the affected side

Unloader One osteoarthritis (OA) knee brace

The Unloader One brace provides excellent suspension and unloading for knees affected by Osteoarthritis.

The Unloader One is a low-profile, lightweight, comfortable brace that applies an unloading lever force to the users knee, by utilizing a 3-point lever system that is applied, by shifting a percentage of the forces of the users body weight away from the affected/damaged compartment in the affected knee, to the unaffected compartment of the knee. This unloading of weight/force reduces pain which in turn improves function and decreases the use of medication.

Please query the options to trial one of these braces for 7 days to test out the unloading action and pain relief during your daily activities. A 50% deposit will be needed to secure the trial

Pro Knee OA

  • The Pro Knee is indicated for persons with early and moderate uni compartmental osteoarthritis of the knee.
  • Medial or lateral joint pain
  • Symptomatic, uni-compartmental meniscus degeneration.
  • The compressive knee sleeve with unloading is designed to provide pain relief for early stages of osteoarthritis.
  • Breathable and comfortable
  • EVA integrated stabilizer hinge is suitable for more active sports such as Soccer.

Ankle

Ligaments in the ankle joint can be overextended or may even rupture due to twisting the foot, with or without the application of external force. Such injuries often occur during sports activities. Acute ankle injuries are the most frequent here. They account for approximately 15 to 20% of sport injuries. Sports with frequent, rapid changes of direction, jumps and contact with opposing players are especially risky for the ankle ligament structures. The risk of a renewed ankle injury is elevated, especially among athletes. Approximately one-third of patients suffer another ankle injury within 3 years; among athletes, this figure is as high as 73% of all cases. Later on, many patients also complain about minor yielding of the ankle, pain while walking and running, slight swelling and slight instability of the ankle joint.

Airselect Standard

Airselect puts comfort, control and healing in the hands of the patient with the most advanced pneumatic walking boot available. The integrated inflation system lets patients inflate each aircell individually, to maximise comfort and minimise oedema.

Indications:

  • Stable fractures of the foot/ ankle/ lower leg
  • Severe ankle sparing
  • Post-operative immobilisation.

Formfit Ankle Brace

The Form Fit ankle brace’s advanced design provides the compression and comfort of a soft ankle support with 20 – 35% more protection than traditional stirrups. With a Figure-8 heel lock strapping which performs consistently, unlike taping that stretches over time. Embedded stirrups provide excellent inversion/eversion support. Figure 8 finger pull loops allow the user to easily adjust the figure 8 strap during donning and for quick on-the-fly adjustment during use.

Indications:

  • Ankle sprain
  • Arthritis
  • Contusions
  • Tendonitis
